American Sign Language Community

The American Sign Language (ASL) Community is a Living Learning Community for Deaf students and students committed to improving and/or maintaining their ASL conversational skills. The community is open to students in the Deaf Studies major, students who use ASL in their everyday lives, and students who affiliate with the Deaf community. Through participation in the ASL Community, students will improve their understanding of the Deaf community through immersion in a Deaf and ASL friendly environment with ASL-only common areas, events, and activities. Community events could include guest speakers from the Deaf Community, interactive activities in the ASL lab, community meals, ASL storytelling, and field trips to events highlighting Deaf lifestyle and traditions. This community is a partnership between the Deaf Studies Program and Housing and Residence Life.

Community Benefits

  • Ability to practice sign language with community members, faculty, and staff: This provides an inclusive environment where learners can engage in regular, real-world practice of sign language, enhancing fluency and boosting confidence while fostering deeper connections and understanding between Deaf and hearing individuals within the community.
  • Designated voice-off hours: Voice-off hours immerse participants in an ASL-only environment, encouraging learners to rely solely on sign language for communication, which strengthens language skills, promotes non-verbal communication, and creates equal communication opportunities for both Deaf and hearing individuals.
  • Gain better understanding and awareness of the Deaf community and culture: This helps learners not only acquire sign language proficiency but also develop a deeper cultural competence for the Deaf community, recognizing its unique values, challenges, and history while promoting inclusivity and allyship.
  • Engaging in and planning Deaf programming and events: Involvement in the planning and execution of Deaf-focused events allows learners to contribute to raising awareness, celebrating Deaf culture, and fostering community, while also developing organizational and advocacy skills.

JB Begue, Deaf Studies Program Coordinator

“ The LLC significantly enhanced my sense of community within the Towson University campus.  It brings together a diverse group of ASL users, including students from both within and outside the Deaf Studies Program, as well as community members. I am incredibly grateful that the LLC provided me with the opportunity to encounter such a vibrant and inclusive ASL community within a beyond Towson University. ”
