Personal Property
The Towson University Police Department (TUPD) is committed to helping students, faculty, staff and visitors protect and recover personal belongings.

In addition to our Personal Property Registration Program, we maintain university protocols for Lost and Found items.
Personal Property Registration
Students, faculty, and staff can register property with the TUPD to aid recovery if something gets lost, stolen, or misplaced. Personal property registration is free and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When registering, you’ll provide descriptions and serial numbers of your property. That information will be entered into a national database that law enforcement agencies use to recover items, confirm ownership, and return them to their owners. The information is confidential and only accessible to law enforcement officers.
Register personal property to help recover items that get lost, stolen or misplaced.

Locating Your Items
To locate a lost item on campus:
- Check the building where you lost the item.
Many academic and administrative buildings maintain their own temporary Lost & Found stations (e.g., front desks, department offices, or information desks). - The Information Desk in the University Union handles lost and found items for the TU campus. Items found on campus or in the Union can be brought to the Information Desk. Call or visit the Information Desk if you have lost an item. You must be able to identify the lost item specifically. To retrieve a lost item, you must also present a valid TU One Card or government-issued ID.
- The lost and found is emptied at the end of each month. The remaining valuable items are brought to the Campus Police.
- Towson University’s Office of Public Safety is responsible for the campus lost and found policies. To inquire about a lost item, please visit the Public Safety building or call 410-704-2505 during regular business hours.
- Contact TUPD if your item was not found in the building or is a high-value or essential item. It may have been turned in to the University Police Department.
For lost items of significant value, you may file a property loss report at the University Union. This helps us notify you if the item is recovered.

Help us help you
Recover Your Items
- Clearly label your items using the Property Registry available for free at TU. Add your name, email, or phone number to high-value items so they are easily identified.
- Use our Personal Property Registration Program to register the make, model, and serial number of laptops, bikes, tablets, and other equipment or devices.
- Check with TUPD or the Union front desk regularly for weekly updates if an item is missing.
Tips To Recover Lost Items
- Label your belongings clearly and discreetly.
Whenever possible, add your name, TU email address, and phone number to your items. This includes water bottles, jackets, bags, and tech accessories. Labeled items are easier to return and are more likely to be reported to the rightful owner quickly. - Set your name or emergency number as your cell phone background so that you don't need to open the phone to find the owner.
- Register valuable items with the TUPD Property Registration Program.
- Please take advantage of our free Personal Property Registration Program to protect your high-value items, including laptops, bicycles, headphones, tablets, and calculators. Include the make, model, color, and serial number. This allows University Police to match found items with their rightful owners.
- Follow up consistently if you’ve lost something. If you’ve misplaced an item, check with the building desk attendants or the building manager to determine where it was last seen. Additionally, regularly check with TUPD’s Lost & Found. Items may be turned in days after being found, so multiple follow-ups are encouraged. You can also stop by the University Union Information Desk, as some items may be temporarily held there depending on where they were found.
