For Faculty & Staff

The Public Communication Center is a resource for students, staff, and faculty to better their understandings of speech, advocacy and interpersonal skills.

The Public Communication Center (PCC) is excited to provide mentors specializing in public speaking skills. The PCC offers individual appointments, group appointments, class visits, workshops, and several events per semester. The PCC is housed within the Communication Studies department.

PCC Appointments

Professors will receive an electronic report form when their student(s) attended an appointment. The report form will detail what the mentor and the student worked on at their appointment. If you would like a “yellow slip,” please let your students know to ask for one at the end of their appointment. If you are interested in requiring your students to visit the PCC for a speech or presentation assignment, complete the PCC Assignment Submission Form to provide the instructions and any rubrics to ensure the mentors are prepared for your students.

Our Scheduling software

WCONLINE

We use WCONLINE to schedule appointments. During a class visit, the mentor will demonstrate how to use the scheduling system. This is how your students will make appointments to visit the PCC.

In-Person Workshops

The PCC provides campus-wide public speaking support to faculty and staff with in-person workshops brought to classrooms and departments for convenience. Whether it is an undergraduate or graduate course, if your students have an assigned presentation or research project, we can provide support for public speaking, so you can focus on other content! We also support staff with professional development related to communication, advocacy and interpersonal skills. The following are are standard workshops but we can also customize a workshop based on your needs.

Standard Workshops (In-person or Virtual)

  • PCC Introduction Workshop: A 15–20-minute presentation introducing and explaining how to use the PCC conducted in your class
  • How to Make Presentations POP!: A 60–75 minute workshop providing techniques and tips for ways to make presentations more engaging and visually appealing
  • Communication Skills for Poster Sessions: A 60–75-minute workshop providing techniques for preparing for and giving effective poster presentations. This could be customized to focus on visual aids
  • Putting the Power in Persuasion: A 60-minute workshop providing techniques and tips for giving an effective persuasive speech
  • Managing Speech Apprehension: A workshop with techniques for managing speech apprehension
