Admission Criteria

  • No GRE scores are required. 
  • A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 (on a 4-point scale) is required for full admission to the program, and 2.75 is required for conditional admission. GPA calculations may be based upon the cumulative units or the last 60 units of the degree. See graduate admission policies for more information.
  • Students without a background in geography may be admitted conditionally, with the requirement that they take the prerequisite courses preferably in the summer prior to joining the graduate program but no later than the end of their first year in the program.

Application Requirements 

Submit an online application, application fee and official transcripts, along with:

  • Letter of Recommendation: One letter of recommendation (Email addresses of recommenders must be entered on application).
  • Statement of Purpose: A statement addressing the following:
    • What experiences first sparked your interest in geography and environmental planning? Was it a research project, a field study, or a moment when you saw the impact of urban design on communities? Describe how these experiences shaped your academic and career goals.
    • How will our graduate program help you take the next step? Consider specific aspects—faculty expertise, research opportunities, or hands-on learning—that align with your ambitions.
    • Tell the story of your journey into this field and how our program will help you create meaningful impact.

Additional Requirements for International Applicants

U.S. Immigration requires F1 and J1 students to be enrolled full-time with the majority of their classes taken in-person and on campus.
